13 YEAR VISIT
The 13 Year Visit involves a comprehensive exam, a review of your child’s development and growth, and a review of your child’s diet, voiding habits, and sleeping routines. Depression screening will continue and you may obtain a sports physical at this visit. There will be a 5 minute private talk with your provider offered to your child to maintain adequate care as they develop their private lives. If your child is now a young woman, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also recommends yearly urine testing for females to screen for two asymptomatic illnesses that can place their future fertility at risk.
Attention: This private talk is not to keep secrets, but your child will start developing a private life and your provider needs to foster trust with your child so that this doctor-patient relationship is there in the future to continue to provide your child with excellent care. To build that trust, confidentiality between your child and the provider will be maintained unless lives are endangered by maintaining it. We hope you understand we do this to deliver your child the best healthcare we can offer.
